Our Schools
Here's a view into three Music for Minors schools, as well as an introduction to their music champions who care so deeply about music for their students. A complete listing of our schools can be seen here.

Image
Franklin Elementary
Franklin-McKinley School District,
San Jose
Music Champion: Johnny Do, 3rd grade teacher
“The Music for Minors program is a great experience for our students and something that most of them would never be exposed to otherwise,” says 3rd grade teacher Johnny Do, “I’m amazed at the range of effects I’ve seen on the kids and overall how music provides another outlet for them to express themselves.”
Franklin Elementary is one of 16 schools in the district. Serving 760 transitional kindergarten – 6th grade students, 82% of Franklin’s students are from low-income families. These students represent tremendous cultural and ethnic diversity. The two predominant ethnic groups are Hispanic and Vietnamese, with 62% English-language learners. Music can play an especially important role in a school like Franklin as it bolsters language skills and creates a shared repertoire to bridge differences.
Despite a lack of funding, Johnny was determined that his students have weekly music and successfully secured a grant through the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

Rodeo Hills Elementary
John Swett Unified School District, Rodeo
Music Champion: Bonner Odell, Parent Activist
“Music--singing and dancing--really brings people together,” Bonner Odell comments, “I have seen first-hand what’s possible when a school has arts education, especially for those that serve a high percentage of at-risk kids.”
Rodeo Hills is the only elementary school in this district, located in Contra Costa County on the eastern shore of San Pablo Bay*. The 670 students come from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities, with the predominant groups Hispanic (32%), Black (20%), Asian (19%), and White (16%). With 77% coming from low-income families, a school music program is especially impactful and can help level the playing field for these children who have little to no access to music education outside of school.
Bonner was fully committed to bring music to her children’s school, and worked to engage the parent community, rally school district support, and finally obtain program funding. As a result, all students—transitional kindergarten through 2nd grade—are now participating in weekly music.
*Although this school represents new geography for MFM, we will go where the need is greatest, within our capability. This location is convenient for an increasingly large segment of our teaching talent that lives in the East Bay.

Daniel Webster School
Jefferson Elementary School District,
Daly City
Music Champion: Jennifer Knopf, Principal
For many of our students, school is the only opportunity for music education and I’ve seen so many benefits.” Jennifer Knopf remarks, “They just love it!
Daniel Webster serves 350 kindergarten through 5th grade students, mainly Filipino (41%) and Hispanic (33%) -- 68% of whom come from low-income families. Music gives all students a chance to shine, even those who do not excel academically. It helps many feel successful and comfortable at school, both preconditions for higher achievement.
After five years of a Music for Minors program, Daniel Webster school has gone silent and this year does not have music. A significant drop in enrollment, along with the pressing need to fund a school counselor position resulted in a lack of available funds. We will continue working together in the hope of reinstating music in the future.

Our Music

Here's a glimpse into the music making: Our Kids, Our Teachers, and other MFM partners!

"Nimrod" from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations

This video features our partners at the Googler Orchestra. Enjoy this beautiful piece from an accomplished group of musicians, guaranteed to bring a moment of serenity to your day.

“Yeliztli Cuica” (translation - "The Song of Nature")

MFM Music Teacher Francisco Contreras shares music from Pre-Hispanic Mexican culture. Francisco composed this piece while experimenting with the unique instruments of this time. He is playing the Teponaztli (tongue drum) on the bottom left, and the Ayacatchtlis (rattles) on the bottom right to keep the rhythm. On the top left he is playing the Ehecachichtli (wind whistle), Cuahuchichtli (eagle's whistle), and the Ocelochichtli (jaguar's whistle); on the top right he plays the melody with the Ometlapitzalli (double flute). Note: These terms are in Nahuatl, the native language of Mexico.

"Colors of the Wind"

This video features singers from the Fifth Grade Choir Program in San Carlos (Mariposa and Arroyo Elementary Schools -- all graduates of the MFM program). Choir Director: Sara Rangel-Murphy; Accompanist: Grace Schulz; and Nikki Reynolds produced the video.

"What a Wonderful World"

This video features our team of Instrumental Music Teachers who provide the district-wide program for San Mateo Foster City School District. They produced this as a year-end performance gift for all of their students. From top left: Thomas Wade (violin; here on vocals); Elisa Moles (flute); Jonathan Szin (clarinet); Ronna McMurray (violin); Stephanie Stroud (trumpet and vocals); and, Nathan Wilen (voice). Arranged by Stephanie Stroud.

"Easy Life"

This talented musical duo, Karl McHugh and Ariel Estebez, are a genuine Music for Minors love story. When their paths first crossed they were both teaching for us. Karl has composed, performed and recorded extensively and Ariel is currently a member of the elite Irish choral ensemble Anuna. Karl and Ariel were married last year and divide their time between Ireland and the Bay Area. Nowadays Karl provides technical expertise to MFM on a variety of projects and Ariel is back on our faculty teaching the online music lessons for the fourth grade

"The Nearness of You"

Here is a beautiful tune from MFM Music Teacher Jonathan Szin, on clarinet. Jon teaches in our district-wide fifth-grade instrumental program for San Mateo Foster City District. Also featured are Jon’s musician housemates: Ari Micich on piano and Matt Carr on Trombone.

"I’m Lucky There’s a Sun"

MFM Music Teacher Dylan Librande shares some thoughts, along with his favorite song from the second-grade curriculum that he is teaching in our online music lessons.

"Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"

Karsten is a fifth grader from our San Carlos programs. When he is not busy doing school work, providing tech support for his class, or learning about the latest Apple products, he pursues his continued love of music by studying violin. Karsten might also be related to someone in our office (wink, wink - a very proud mom).

"Stay at Home"

Enjoy Cory Cullinan's new song, created with daughters Sidney and Riley, wife Janette, and a cameo appearance by Summer the Bearded Dragon! Cory's long-time association with Music for Minors began early in his childhood when his mother was an active volunteer music teacher at his Los Altos school. A graduate of Stanford, Cory first taught music and later distinguished himself as the nationally-acclaimed children's musician, recording artist and author, Doctor Noize. Cory has performed an MFM concert and was a featured speaker at our annual fundraiser.

"Lift Up Your Voice"

Tierra Linda Middle School Choir, all graduates of the Music for Minors program.

"Superstition"

Students from Montgomery Elementary performing with Googapella at the MFM Imagine event.
