Docent FAQ's

Q.  What are the qualifications to become a Music Docent?

To become a docent, you must:

  • Enjoy singing
  • Like working with groups of children
  • Complete the MFM Training
  • Serve as an intern immediately after the completion of training
  • Be available to teach ½ hour per week during the rest of the school year, as well as the following school year

Q. Where can I teach?

Music Interns and Docents are placed in classrooms at schools that would be a good match for both them and the school. MFM partners with local schools and every effort is made to meet requests depending on vacancies and a school’s need for a music program. If you are interested in being placed at a specific school or classroom and they have a need, then chances are high it will be a good fit.

Q. When do I start my training?

MFM Training is offered once each year, beginning every September and running through November. For more information click here.

Q. When do I start my internship?

We begin to place volunteers while they are still completing training in October and November. Starting your internship in a classroom while still in training allows you to bring any issues into the training class for consultation. Interns will serve their internship through the remaining school year before becoming a Music Docent.

Q. What is the commitment of a Music Docent?

A Music Docent must commit to teaching at least one-half hour per week in an assigned classroom for one full school year after completing his/her internship.

Q. I have considerable background in music. Why should I even go through training and an internship?

You will have the opportunity to work in a field you enjoy and for which you are skilled. Training helps you learn and teach age-appropriate musical activities to reach children and get them involved in a classroom setting. Gaining experience as an intern provides you the safety net and support you will need in your new classroom(s).

Q. What is MFM’s commitment to me?

Music for Minors is passionately committed to its music docents. We actively provide our interns and docents with:

  • A highly regarded college-credited training course
  • Ongoing workshops, education and supervision
  • Peer networking opportunities
  • Access to MFM’s music resources and instruments
  • An annual evaluation of your work
  • A letter of recommendation (upon request)
  • Recognition and appreciation at annual events
  • Future certification opportunities

The rewards can be extraordinary and life-changing. Your experience and interaction will evolve as a volunteer music instructor with your students. Some of our volunteers have moved on to professional music instruction careers. Many docents have reported getting appreciation from their own or other children long after they have left their elementary school.
